Since I have been residing in this beautiful land of hills, mountains, lakes, dams, waterfalls, table lands from 23 years, one of the biggest craze I see in tourists visiting Lonavala is about the famous Chikki of Lonavala- Maganlal Chikki.
Now those who have visited Lonavala must often get confused with the multiple shops seen on the roadways of Lonavala as well as Khandala. One might wonder how can there be so many shops that too ona single road, each named with the name 'Maganlal Chikki?'
So here's the truth unfold!
The original Maganlal chikki shop is situated in the core market area of Lonavala near the railway station exit. The Maganlal shop has been inherited by two brothers. One brother has the business of renting the franchise to other shop owners who wish to run their shops on the name of 'Maganlal Chikki' . While the other brother manages the original Maganlal chikki shop. The shop produces it own sweets and sells is individually. There's no distribution of these products to any other shops and that's the specialty of this original Maganlal chikki. The source of production of Chikki for the other franchisee is different. They either get it from different sources or produce it by themselves.
ORIGINAL MAGANLAL CHIKKI SHOP, LONAVALAThose who don't know what Lonavala chikki is, here's a brief description-
Lonavala chikki is a popular Indian sweet snack that originated in the town of Lonavala, located in the state of Maharashtra. Lonavala is a hill station known for its beautiful landscapes and pleasant climate, and it has become famous for its chikki.
Chikki is a traditional Indian confection made primarily from jaggery (unrefined cane sugar) and various types of nuts, most commonly peanuts and sesame seeds. The preparation of Lonavala chikki involves heating jaggery until it reaches a hard-crack stage and then mixing in roasted nuts or seeds. Once the mixture is ready, it is spread on a flat surface and rolled out into thin sheets before being cut into square or rectangular shapes.
The chikki hardens as it cools down, resulting in a crunchy and sweet treat. Apart from peanuts and sesame seeds, some variations of Lonavala chikki may include other nuts like almonds, cashews, or even coconut. The combination of crunchy nuts or seeds with the caramelized sweetness of jaggery makes Lonavala chikki a delightful and popular snack among locals and tourists alike.
In India, chikki is commonly enjoyed during festivals and special occasions, and it also serves as a delicious energy-boosting snack for travelers. Lonavala chikki has gained recognition and is widely available in various flavors and packaging across the country. If you visit Lonavala, trying out the authentic chikki is a must!
