1. Harishchandragad Trek:

Location: It is located in Ahmednagar District, Western Ghats

Distance: Approx 34 kilometers

Difficulty Level: Difficult Trek


Harishchandragad, situated at an elevation of 4,671 feet, is a paradise for trekkers and nature lovers. The trek to this fort offers breathtaking views of  surrounding valleys and cliffs. The challenging part of this trek is the rocky terrain and steep ascents, especially the very famous 'Taramati' climb. Monsoons add an extra layer of difficulty due to the slippery trails. The main attractions here include the Kokankada cliff, Kedareshwar Cave and the grand Konkan Darwaja.


2. Kalavantin Durg Trek:

Location: It is located in Raigad District, Western Ghats

Distance: Approx 6 kilometers

Difficulty Level: Very Difficult Trek


Kalavantin Durg is often known as the 'Stairway to Heaven' due to its daunting staircase that leads to the summit. The trek involves climbing nearly vertical rock-cut steps, which can be intimidating for even the seasoned trekkers. The trek offers a panoramic view of Prabalgad and the surrounding valleys. Trust me, It's not for the faint-hearted, and safety precautions are a must.


3. Alang-Madan-Kulang (AMK) Trek:

Location: It is located in Nashik District, Western Ghats

Distance: Approx 21 kilometers

Difficulty Level: Very Difficult Trek


The AMK trek is a trifecta of challenges in the Sahyadri ranges. Trekkers usually undertake this epic journey as a three-day expedition. The trek involves climbing three peaks - Alang (4,840 ft), Madan (4,650 ft) and Kulang (4,840 ft). The terrain is rocky, steep, and even demanding. Camping on the forts and traversing narrow ridges is a great adventure in itself. It's a true test of endurance and navigation skills as well.


4. Sandhan Valley Trek:

Location: It is located in  Ahmednagar District, Western Ghats

Distance: Approx 5 kilometers

Difficulty Level: Moderate to Difficult Trek


The Sandhan Valley trek which is also known as the 'Valley of Shadows,' offers a unique experience of hiking through a narrow gorge with 300-foot rock walls on both sides. The difficulty lies in navigating through waterlogged sections and rappelling down the 60-foot rock patches. The trail also includes camping in the valley, making it a more memorable adventure.


5. Salher-Salota-Mulher Trek:

Location: It is located in Nashik District, Western Ghats

Distance: Approx 40 kilometers

Difficulty Level: Difficult Trek


The Salher-Salota-Mulher trek is one of the least explored yet one of the most challenging treks in Maharashtra. It involves conquering three forts - Salher (5,137 ft), Salota (4,915 ft) and Mulher (4,978 ft). The trek requires traversing dense forests, steep climbing patches, and negotiating tricky rock patches. The views from these forts, including the Salher Fort's beautiful plateau, make all the efforts worthwhile.
