 Hi all, so on our recent trip to Karnataka, one of the worth watching and visiting waterfalls was Bhimeshwar falls. It was a totally offbeat place which was not known to many people except the locals. The roads were so dangerous that only the locals could drive their jeep to this place if you did not wish to walk through a difficult 1 hour trail to this place. The trail was physically challenging and the muddy road made it more difficult to hold onto the shoe grips. However, the view was worth the wait!!!!

Situated in the nearby area to the renowned Jog Falls, this unique waterfall offers a tranquil escape for those who wish to witness a blend of natural splendor and historical significance. 

History

The history of  Bhimeshwar Waterfalls of Karnataka is interwoven with the rich tapestry of Indian mythology. According to local legends, it is believed that the Pandava prince Bhima, from our favourite epic Mahabharata, carved out a path for the river Sharavathi to flow, creating this waterfall in the process. The name "Bhimeshwar" itself is a tribute to Bhima. While the scientific origins of the waterfall are attributed to natural geological processes, the cultural and historical significance it holds is deeply rooted in the tales of Mahabharata.

Location Details

The Bhimeshwar Waterfall is situated in the Shimoga district of Karnataka, India. It lies in the region very close to another renowned waterfall, Jog Falls, which is approximately 50 kilometers away. 



How to Reach

Reaching the Bhimeshwar Waterfall requires a combination of road and foot travel. The nearest city is Shimoga, which serves as a starting point for this trail. From Shimoga, you can take a road journey to the nearby village, which acts as a base camp.

Nearest City and Village

The nearest major city is Shimoga, alos known as the "Gateway of Malnad." It is well-connected by roadways to various parts of Karnataka and serves as the ideal launchpad for your journey to Bhimeshwar Waterfalls. As you reach closer to the waterfall, you will reach a local village that serves as the starting point for the trek to the falls. I do not remember the name of the village, but you would the boards of this waterfall everywhere once you reach the village.

Accessibility and Trekking

Accessing the Bhimeshwar Waterfall involves a moderate trek that takes you through the green landscapes, dense forests, and picturesque trails. The trek is suitable for both beginner and experienced trekkers, offering a blend of adventure and natural beauty. The trek usually takes around 2-3 hours, depending on your pace and stops along the way. We however reached within one hour since we did not take a single stop for rest in between. As you approach the waterfall, the sound of cascading water and the cool mist in the air create an aura of serenity and excitement.

Total Expense

The total expense of visiting the Bhimeshwar Waterfall can vary based on factors such as transportation, accommodation, and personal spending choices. If you choose to take the jeeps to reach the falls instead of walk, they charge 800 to 1000 for a round trip. and if you take any juice or eatable in between, it would just cost not more than 50 rupees per head. The waterfall has no entry fees and there is a very beautiful mandir just beside it. Do not forget to taste their unique prasad there.
And yes, beware of the monkeys, you have to be very conscious about your belongings and other important stuff.
